GEF-CSO Network (formerly known as GEF-NGO Network) is an independent network of civil society organisations which acts as a bridge between civil society and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) - the largest global financing mechanism for the environment.

(January - March 2016) 

 

Three months have since passed since we enter 2016. Here is an update on what we and some of the GEF families have been up to in the last 3 months.

 

News from Secretariat   

Review of the GEF-CSO Network

The GEF Independent Evaluation Office (IEO) has completed the review of the GEF-CSO Network. The review which commenced on June 2015 was upon the request of the GEF Council to review the Network’s performance, relevance, effectiveness and results in promoting knowledge dissemination and CSO involvement in GEF policies and programs. The evaluation findings and recommendation will be presented to the GEF 50th Council Meeting in June 2016.


Country Contact Points

Country Contact Point (CCP) of the Network has been appointed in 23 countries in 7 regions. The role of the CCP is to actively assist the Regional Focal Point (RFP) in the development of the GEF-CSO Network in the country.  Click here to view the CCC in your country/region.


Update on Network Membership

The Network welcomed 14 new member organisations to the Network in March 2016. Click here for the list of the new members. As of today, the Network consists of 501 members. 

     
 News from Network Regions  
Southern Africa  -  Regional CSO Meeting in Botswana, 16 Feb 2016 

A regional CSO meeting was held in Gaborone, Botswana, on 16 Feb 2016 prior to the GEF Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW)  for the Southern Africa region which took place from 17 – 19 Feb 2016. The Caribbean - Regional CSO meeting in Trinidad & Tobago, 1 March 2016

A regional CSO meeting was held in Trinidad, Trinidad & Tobago on 1 Mar 2016 prior to the GEF ECW for The Caribbean region which took place from 2-4 Mar 2016. The meeting was attended by 21 CSO representatives from thirteen countries in the region. Click here to view the summary report.

 
 
 

Eastern Europe & Central Asia  - Regional CSO Meeting in Montenegro, 15 Mar 2016

A regional civil society organization (CSO) meeting was held on 15 Mar 2016 in Budva, Montenegro  at the time of the GEF  ECW for Central Asia region. Asia - Regional CSO meeting in Thailand, 29 Mar 2016

A regional CSO meeting was held in Bangkok, Thailand on 29 Mar 2016 prior to the GEF ECW for the Asia region which took place from 30 Mar - 1 Apr 2016. The meeting was attended by 18 CSO representatives from 13 countries in the region. Click here to view the summary report.

 
 
News from Members

Lead Paint Nearly Eliminated in Ethiopia and Cameroon 

One-and-a-half years into the African Lead Paint Elimination Project, IPEN reported that progress toward lead paint elimination is being made in all four Project countries, and the Project is also inspiring other African countries to begin their own lead paint elimination efforts. Sustainable Rural Tourism Development in Georgia

Sustainable rural tourism development is having both positive and negative impact in Georgia. This is based on a study by International Centre for Caucasus Tourism (ICCT). Click here to view the study report

   

Biodiversity Conservation in Mongolia

Green Initiative has intensified its activity in the biodiversity conservation and scientific research in Mongolia during the last years. This is done by increasing the public awareness, particularly in the community/ herders’ involvement in the conservation of wildlife and other natural resources management. Saves Desert Dates (Balanite Aegypitical) and Sheanut Tres from Extinction

With the SGP’s support,  Katakwi Conserve Uganda has led a conservation initiative to help communities to sustainably harness’ biodiversity by preserving two indigenous fruit tree species, desert dates (balanite aegypitiaca) and Shea butter tree (vitellaria paradox)  from extinction. Read more

Livelihoods and forests at increased risk if land rights are ignored, says new report

2 March, 2016 - Indigenous Peoples and local communities protect half the world's land, but formally own just 10 percent, according to a report released today by a global alliance of NGOs.

London, March 2nd 2016: The Global Call to Action on Indigenous and Community Land Rights, backed by more than 300 organizations all over the world, launches today with the publication of a new report. 

 

Asia Regional Launch of the Global Call to Action on Indigenous and Community Land Rights 

12 March 2016 - Indigenous peoples from different areas in Asia came together in Yangon, Myanmar and unanimously decided to join the global campaign to demand their land rights, also known as the Global Call to Action on Indigenous and Community Land Rights Campaign

03/10/16 -
The GEF presented its latest report to the 7th meeting of the International Negotiating Committee on Mercury, which took place in Amman, Jordan, from March 10 to 15.
 
03/08/16 -
City leaders from around the world met in Singapore today for the launch of the ‘Global Platform for Sustainable Cities’, an initiative expected to mobilize up to $1.5 billion for urban sustainability programs in 11 developing countries.

Sarteneja, a traditional fishing community on the northeastern coast of Belize, is considered one of the primary stakeholders of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System – World Heritage Site (BBRRS-WHS). GEF 50th Council Meeting and CSO Consultation Meeting

The 50th GEF Council meeting will take place from June 7-9, 2016 in Washington DC, USA. Prior to that a GEF Consultations with Civil Society will be held on June 6, 2016. CSO representative who wish to participate with financial support can apply online at https://www.thegef.org/gef/50th-Council-CSO-Registration?page=1. Registration for self-financed participants is until May 6, 2016.

About the GEF-CSO Network

The GEF-CSO Network comprises nearly 500 member organisations with experience and expertise in GEF's areas of work from all regions around the world. It is governed by a global Coordination Committee composed of representatives of elected Regional Focal Point (RFP) organisations from 16 geographic regions and three Indigenous Peoples Focal Points (IPFP) from Asia, Africa and Latin America. The day-to-day work of the Network at global level is coordinated by a Management Team led by a Chair and Vice Chair elected from among the Coordination Committee members while work at regional level is facilitated by RFPs and IPFPs.
