GEF-CSO Network (formerly known as GEF-NGO Network) is an independent network of civil society organisations which acts as a bridge between civil society and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) - the largest global financing mechanism for the environment.

News from Secretariat   

GEF-CSO Network Consultation Meeting, 6 June 2016, Washington DC.

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council Consultation meeting with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) took place on 6 June 2016, the day before the opening of the 50th meeting of the GEF Council. Participants highlighted that the events mark the 21st anniversary of the GEF-CSO Network and the 25th anniversary of the GEF. The CSO consultation included a dialogue with the GEF CEO and Chairperson, Naoko Ishii, discussions on an evaluation and recommendations for changes in the GEF-CSO Network, case studies on the GEF experience in five countries and future directions for the GEF. 50th GEF Council Meeting, 7-9 June 2016, Washington DC

The 50th GEF Council Meeting was held in Washington DC from 7 – 9 June 2016. The Council approved a new financial initiative and an associated trust fund to help developing countries monitor and report progress in a transparent manner under the Paris Climate Agreement. In terms of funding, the Council approved an additional $40 million for the Global Wildlife Program (GWP) expanding its support in the fight against illegal trafficking to 19 countries in Africa and Asia as well as another $360 million in other projects. The Network is conducting election for the Regional Focal Points for 4 regions : South America, Central Africa, West Asia and The Pacific. Click here for more details.

 

Update on Network Membership

A total of 12 members have joined The Network in June 2016. Click here for the list of the new members. As of today, the Network consists of 516 members.

South America  -  Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) in Argentina, 18-21 April 2016 

A regional CSO meeting was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 18 April 2016 prior to the GEF ECW for the South America region which took place from 19 – 22 April 2016.

 

Meso America - Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) in Guatemala, 26-29 April 2016 

A regional civil society organization (CSO) meeting was held on 25 Apr 2016 in Guatemala City, Guatemala at the time of the GEF Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) for Mesoamerica region. The meeting was attended by 33 CSO representatives from 7 countries in the region.  


West Africa - Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) in Sierra Leone, 10-13 May 2016 

The GEF Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) for coastal West African countries was held in Freetown, Sierra Leone from the 11-13 of May, 2016. As part of the activities of the ECW, the CSO members representing 8 West African countries had a meeting on 10 May to discuss and identify concrete steps to enhance engagement in GEF CSO Network activities in the region. West Africa - Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) in Dakar, Senegal, 17-20 May 2016 

A regional CSO meeting was held in Dakar, Senegal prior to the GEF ECW for West Africa region which took place from 17-20 May 2016. The meeting was attended by 12 CSO representatives from 8 countries in the region. Click here to view the summary report.

 

                           


Eastern Europe & Central Asia - Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) in Astana, Kazakhstan, 28-30 June 2016 

A regional CSO meeting was held in Astana, Kazakhstan prior to the GEF ECW for Eastern Europe & Central Asia region which took place from 28-30 June 2016. The meeting was attended by 14 CSO representatives from 9 countries in the region. Click here to view the summary report.

D.R. Congo - Landuse and Climate Change Effects on Livelihood and Sediment and Carbon Loading in the Lake Tanganyika Region 

The biodiversity and stability of Lake Tanganyika of D.R. Congo ecosystem is increasing threatened by heavily impacted micro-catchments from the northern section. This is based on a study conducted by Aube Nouvelle pour la Femme et le Développement (ANFD). Read more. 

 

Lesotho - Unearthing Environmental Pollution in the Mejamatalana Stream and Valley

A project is being undertaken by the Environmental Justice and Advocacy Centre of Lesotho [LEJAC] to rehabilitate the Mejametalana Stream and Valley and restore their natural ecosystem in order to revive natural flow of the stream. Read more.

 GEF Launches New User Guide on Indigenous People and Project Financing

On May 12th, 2016, the GEF launched a user guide for Indigenous Peoples on GEF project financing on the margins of the 15th session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues 15th Session Report

UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK, June 9th, 2016 – The Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues concluded its 15th session (May 9-20th 2016) with the adoption of a report, including recommendations for States, UN bodies and indigenous peoples. The unedited version of the report is available here. The report will be presented to the Economic and Social Council in July 2016.

About the GEF-CSO Network

The GEF-CSO Network comprises nearly 500 member organisations with experience and expertise in GEF's areas of work from all regions around the world. It is governed by a global Coordination Committee composed of representatives of elected Regional Focal Point (RFP) organisations from 16 geographic regions and three Indigenous Peoples Focal Points (IPFP) from Asia, Africa and Latin America. The day-to-day work of the Network at global level is coordinated by a Management Team led by a Chair and Vice Chair elected from among the Coordination Committee members while work at regional level is facilitated by RFPs and IPFPs.
